Closing Event of the INDICATE Pilot and Launch of INDICATE LIFE Marks a Key Step for WLC in European Buildings

On 8 October 2024 in Brussels, the closing event of the INDICATE Pilot project coincided with the official launch of its follow-up initiative, INDICATE LIFE, bringing together experts and stakeholders from across Europe to discuss the latest advancements in sustainable building practices and whole life carbon (WLC) data.

The event featured engaging talks from leading professionals, including:

  • Simone Kongsbak, Smith Innovation

  • Zsolt Toth, Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE)

  • Céline Carré, Saint-Gobain

  • Pau Garcia Audi, DG ENER

  • Miles Rowland, WorldGBC

  • Stephen Barrett, Irish Green Building Council

  • Julie Železná, ČVUT UCEEB

  • Antonio Garcia, Universidad de Sevilla

  • Paul Baustert, Ministry of Economy Luxembourg

  • Laura Pallares, WorldGBC

The discussions highlighted the need for robust national WLC methodologies and addressed key data gaps that European countries must tackle ahead of the 2028 Global Warming Potential (GWP) measurement deadline.

Simone Kongsbak, Partner and COO at Smith Innovation, said:
"INDICATE LIFE responds to market gaps and methodological inconsistencies, supporting countries in developing national policies for sustainable construction. The engagement from national consortia uniting policy, industry, academia, and data providers is incredibly encouraging."

The event also celebrated the achievements of the original INDICATE pilot project, which laid the groundwork for building-level WLC data in Czechia, Ireland, and Spain. INDICATE LIFE will now expand this work to Austria, Croatia, Italy, Luxembourg, and Hungary, providing guidance, technical support, and fostering collaboration across Europe.

Xavier Le Den, Market Director at Ramboll, commented:
"LCA data and benchmarks are essential for the building sector to achieve climate neutrality. This event demonstrated the importance of continuing this work across countries where capacity for national LCA benchmarks is still developing."
