The INDICATE Pilot in Ireland aims to demonstrate how collaborative research can influence national building policy. As more than 50 building assessments originally completed using the INDICATE methodology will now be reworked using the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) whole life carbon (WLC) methodology, set to become a national requirement under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).  

How can Europe move from ambition to implementation on Whole Life Carbon (WLC)? 

This question was the focus of INDICATE LIFE’s WLC networking event, held in Brussels in June. The event convened national partners and key European stakeholders to exchange knowledge, explore solutions, and strengthen collaboration on WLC implementation.

The INDICATE LIFE project has launched in Luxembourg, with national partners beginning collaborative work to improve whole life carbon (WLC) data collection and support policy development in the built environment. The launch event outlined Luxembourg’s roadmap for WLC data collection, including plans to analyse 25 real construction projects as initial case studies. 

Following the project launch in October 2024, the INDICATE LIFE team has travelled to four European countries to lead design sprints with national partners. These sessions brought together green building councils, research institutions and government agencies to assess each country’s whole life carbon (WLC) data landscape, identify key challenges, and begin developing strategies for the future.  

THE INDICATE LIFE project’s Austrian launch event brought together government, finance, property developers and industry leaders to discuss the role of whole life carbon (WLC) data in building sustainability.  

The INDICATE LIFE project was officially launched in Zagreb, Croatia, on November 21 at Green Building Council Croatia's seventh Sustainable Building Conference. With more than 1,300 professionals from across the built environment in attendance, the conference provided an ideal platform to introduce the project in Croatia. 

The INDICATE LIFE project has officially launched in Italy, aiming to improve whole life carbon (WLC) data in the Italian built environment. Hosted by the Green Building Council Italia (GBC Italia) in Milan, the event brought together policymakers and national stakeholders to discuss the policy frameworks and technical tools necessary to enhance WLC data collection and assessment in Italy.  

On 8 October 2024 in Brussels, the closing event of the INDICATE Pilot project coincided with the official launch of its follow-up initiative, INDICATE LIFE, bringing together experts and stakeholders from across Europe to discuss the latest advancements in sustainable building practices and whole life carbon (WLC) data.
