INDICATE LIFE launches national design sprints across Europe

Following the project's launch in October 2024, the INDICATE LIFE team has led design sprints across Italy, Luxembourg, Austria and Croatia. These collaborative sessions focused on three key objectives: assessing each country's whole life carbon (WLC) data landscape, identifying national challenges, and refining strategies for WLC data collection and policy support.

Each national design sprint brought together key stakeholders from across the built environment, creating a space for knowledge exchange and strategic planning for the project's future.

Italy

The Italian national team gathered for the design sprint in Milan, accompanied by representatives from Smith Innovation, BPIE, and KU Leuven.

Green Building Council Italia organised the design sprint in Italy, joined by Università degli Studi di Bergamo, ENEA, Politecnico di Milano, Harpaceas Srl, and Politecnico di Torino. Together, these organisations combined academic, technical, and sustainability expertise.

The design sprint in Milan was organised in collaboration with the Building Life 2 initiative and the discussions aligned with Green Building Council Italia’s broader decarbonisation goals outlined in their 2022 Roadmap for Decarbonisation and Sustainable Transformation in the Construction Industry.

Luxembourg

The Luxembourg national team, alongside representatives from Smith Innovation and BPIE.

The Luxembourg session brought together CDEC (Conseil pour le Développement Economique de la Construction), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), Energie et Environnement S.A., and representatives from the Ministère de l'Économie Luxembourg. National officials also attended the event.

The project aims to build a harmonised database of WLC assessments of buildings in Luxembourg, identify emission hotspots and effectively guide policy towards decarbonisation across the value chain.

Austria

The Austrian national team participated in the design sprint in Vienna, alongside representatives from the World Green Building Council, BPIE, KU Leuven, and Smith Innovation.

ÖGNI – Austrian Sustainable Building Council hosted the Austrian design sprint in Vienna alongside representatives from the national team, including ATP Sustain, einszueins architektur and Technische Universität Graz

During the design sprint, the national team discussed their aim to standardise a WLC methodology to align with European standards such as Level(s) and the EPBD.

Croatia

Green Building Council Croatia, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb, and Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar, who form the Croatian national team, were joined by key stakeholders during the design sprint in Zagreb.

During the session, the Croatian team shared their analysis of their current tools and compared them to global best practices to identify ways to improve accuracy and impact.

Hungary

Hungary Green Building Council, who form the national team and are participating in the project as a follower country, held an online design sprint with the INDICATE LIFE team to define their initial steps in the project.

United by a common goal

While each country brings its own unique national landscape, regulatory framework, and data infrastructure, all five member states share one common objective: developing robust WLC data systems and supporting effective policy implementation across Europe.
